The Keytesville Chamber of Commerce chose Rainbow Gardens Housing Corporation, a very beneficial asset to the community, as the August business of the month! The Rainbow Gardens Housing Corporation is a HUD (Housing and Urban Development) subsidized apartment located the junction of Highway 24 and Highway 5 in Keytesville.
The apartment complex provides housing for individuals with disabilities in the very low-income bracket in Chariton County. It is also a provider for Department of Mental Health which allows it to provide life skills training to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. These are obtained through case management services and individuals can receive services based upon each one’s individual needs. This determination of services is completed as a joint effort between the individual himself/herself and other interested persons or advocates.
The housing complex works hard to stay current in both services and facilities. In terms of property upkeep, it has recently had the parking lot repaved and sealed. The managers had new flooring laid last year and recently have had new ceiling fans and vanity tops installed. The managers have also recently broadened their contracted services with Department of Mental Health to provide more options for their clients’ needs.
If one is interested in living in the housing complex, all they have to do is complete a free application and a screening will be completed to determine if the person is eligible for housing there. Cathy Kahler, of the housing complex states, “The best thing about the housing complex is it is unique in how it is set up. We feel like everyone is family. We want to make sure everyone is living as happily and independently as possible.” She attributes a lot of this to the longevity of the staff which has allowed everyone to get to know the tenants and clients. The employees also strive to treat everyone with the respect and dignity they deserve.
