Nikki Medlin

The Keytesville Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate Nikki Medlin for being the Volunteer of the Quarter for the 1st quarter of 2019! For those of you who don’t know Nikki, here’s a bit about her and the work she does to help make and keep Keytesville great!

Nikki and her husband, Gordon, moved to Keytesville in 2000 with her four children Dustin, Amanda, Emely, and Isaac. With their children being Keytesville school graduates and attendees, Nikki and Gordon became very involved in the Keytesville school community. Nikki works at Walsworth Publishing in Marceline in the accounting department and has worked there since 2001. Nikki comes from a line of Keytesville high graduates including her mother Judy (Smith) Roe and her grandparents Wayne Smith and Louise (Bentley) Smith.

Nikki volunteers hundreds of hours every year towards school-related activities. Currently, she is the Treasurer of the Keytesville Athletic Boosters. Besides her Treasurer duties, she established and currently runs the Athletic Boosters facebook page and coordinates with coaches to post the sports’ teams schedules as well. With the recent completion of the Keytesville 5th and 6th grade tournament, Nikki clocked approximately 120 volunteer hours on the tournament. The tournament concession stand nets the only yearly fundraising monies for the Athletic Boosters. Her duties included prep work, shopping for supplies, working to keep the event running smoothly, cleaning up, scheduling, and anything else that needed to be done.

The Medlins also spend lots of time voluntarily traveling to school and community events to take pictures for the newspaper and to post on social media. Nikki states that they spend an average of 20 hours a week traveling to and photographing games during basketball season. Nikki says she feels that the kids put in lots of time and hard work during school and they should be recognized for their accomplishments. Nikki’s goal is for every kid who has their picture taken to feel like “a star.” They know how hard it is for parents to take good pictures of their kids while watching games, and hope that once their high school careers are over, the kids and their parents will be thankful for the memories that she and Gordon are able to capture for them.

Besides taking pictures of athletic competitions, Nikki and her family also photograph many community events including festivals, school programs, trivia nights, and so on. Nikki also volunteers to collect silent auction items for the KMAD (Kids Making A Difference) silent auction that’s held during the Pink Out game. She has done this for the last three years. She volunteers to work the Buddy Pack Carnival when it occurs as well.

Nikki says the following, “Keeping our little community in the news is important. A lot of good things happen in Keytesville and the rest of the county needs to know it. If members of the community have something that’s newsworthy, please send it on to the newspaper! As volunteers, my family can’t always attend every event, so we encourage others to send in information. Let Chariton County know that Keytesville is alive and kicking!” The Chamber of Commerce wholeheartedly agrees and salutes Nikki as this quarter’s volunteer of the quarter.
